What Is This Book About?

Pumpkin's 8th birthday is a splashy celebration—a pool party at her beloved Titi’s house, surrounded by laughter, cake, and all her favorite people.

As the party buzzes around them, Titi steals a quiet moment with their godchild and asks, “Pumpkin, who’s your best friend?”

Pumpkin is a bit befuddled by the question; how do you define “best friend”? Is a best friend the one she plays with most? The one who goes on wild adventures with her? Or the one who always makes her laugh?

Looking around at all of her wonderful guests, Pumpkin reflects on each of her friends and describes what she loves about their unique friendship.

Pumpkin eventually comes to a powerful conclusion: she doesn’t have just one best friend. She has many—each one the best in their own way.

This book also contains an age-appropriate explanation of relationship anarchy, and a very fun interactive activity that helps children (and adults) integrate the concept.

Why Should It Exist?

It’s important for a children’s book about relationship anarchy to exist because it expands the way kids understand love, friendship, and connection beyond traditional hierarchies. By showing that relationships don’t have to follow a “best” or “most important” structure, children learn to value people for their unique qualities rather than rank them. This kind of storytelling nurtures empathy, inclusivity, and emotional intelligence from a young age—empowering kids to form relationships that are authentic, consensual, and rooted in mutual care.

What Relationship Anarchy Educators Are Saying...

“This is the cutest, most beautiful way I’ve ever seen relationship anarchy explained. I was in tears…absolutely glowing. It’s such a heartfelt project that made my little polyamorous preteen heart feel seen. Thank you for creating something so tender, so necessary.”

“In a world where there are so few examples of good, healthy relationships for children, let alone the concepts of relationship anarchy, All My Friends Are Best, shines bright. The impact of seeing possibility models in media can't be understated and what I love about Jessica's amazing book is that it presents so many different possibility models. If you're looking for a book that teaches an important lesson about the way we should value and love each other for all of the different things we bring to the smorgasbord of each other's lives, this is the one.”

“It’s an adorable and heartwarming way to teach children that love doesn’t need to be measured or ranked. This book reminds kids they can have many ‘bests,’ and that friendship, inclusion, and chosen family are about abundance, not scarcity. A beautiful message for growing hearts everywhere.”

Matthew Dowell has been drawing since he could grip a crayon without eating it, and he’s been doodling ever since. Born and raised in Reno, Nevada (where he still lives with his sketchbooks and coffee mugs), Matthew is a mostly self-taught artist with detours through The Art Institute of Seattle, UNR, and TMCC. He creates with pen, pencil, marker, digital tools—and occasionally sheer determination. This is one of his favorite projects yet, mostly because it let him draw fun things and call it “work.”
